About_counselling_and_psychotherapy.html
  1. Secure attachment is the foundation for a healthy parent-child relationship:
A child's trauma and attachment difficulties can trigger unresolved issues in the carer's own history.

  2. Therapy starts with several sessions for the parents alone.

  3. Attachment Focussed Therapy is directive - the therapist and the parents are in charge.
Children with attachment difficulties do not voluntarily face painful emotions.

Parent /Carer Preparation Sessions

These are a combination of emotional support and practical recommendations.

The purpose is:

- to prepare the parents to become active participants in the therapy

  1. -to increase parent's understanding of the effect trauma has on the developing brain and how this impacts

their child's day to day functioning

- to explore how their child's behaviour may trigger parents' own issues

  1. -to offer practical strategies to increase attachment and positive relationships

Parent/Child sessions

The focus is not the child's behaviour but what may be underneath it.

Therapy focuses on the relationship between parent and child.

The aim is to increase mutual understanding, opportunities for atunement and fun and to help repair

breaks in the relationship.

Example of therapeutic intervention :

Initial assessment of child's needs and attachment styles, reading of files and case reports,

including writing a "Trauma Nurture Timeline" of a child's life

  1. -Initial consultation with social workers and carers

  2. -Parent preparation sessions, including exploring carer's attachment style

- Parent/child sessions

- Review meetings with social workers and carers and work with the wider system(School/CAHMS)
